TU Delft

Want to continue your studies after your engineering degree?

Some students consider a graduate or PhD programme abroad, some want to complement their education with a more business-oriented training, while others consider pursuing a design education or PhD in the Netherlands. Still others reject all of these possibilities in favour of immediately taking a job in the business world. If you’re wondering what your best option is, you may find that one of the Smartstudy workshops can help you decide: www.smartstudie.tudelft.nl.

You can also stop by and consult with one of the student deans at Student & Career Support during their general information hours on Tuesdays between 11:30 and 12:30.TU Delft’s Education & Student Affairs department also has an Information Centre for Study and Career. You can find information here that can help you search for a graduate programme. Staff members can also offer you assistance in finding financial aid for the often considerable expense of attending a foreign university. Individual assistance is available for handling practical matters if you already know very clearly what you want. But if you are still exploring various options for further study, you may also consult with an expert. You can make an appointment to speak with someone at the International Office/Student & Career Support office, located at Jaffalaan 9a.

Abroad…

In the orientation phase, we recommend that you first obtain some general information via the website www.tudelft.nl/buitenland, where you will find a clear plan of action outlined. You can also browse through the Information Centre for Study and Career in the E&SA building at Jaffalaan 9a. There you will find information about various foreign universities and the scholarships and funding available, as well as guides and brochures with useful information about studying abroad, reports giving information about the educational systems in the various countries, directories of foreign universities and research institutions, information about language courses, etc.

Note:

Earning a PhD is considered a job in the Netherlands, but in other countries it is treated as graduate study-you are a ‘PhD student’, not an employee. This means, therefore, not only that we treat information about PhD candidate positions in the same way as information about graduate studies but that PhD candidates may likewise be eligible for funding and scholarships. Once you have chosen a direction, you can use the ‘Beursopener’ (Scholarship Opener) application available on the computers in the Information Centre. This application allows you to search on your own for the funding and scholarships that best suit your plans. There are also experts on site in the area of funding and scholarships, the International Programme staff, with whom you can set up an appointment. They are up to date on the newest programmes and knowledgeable about the procedures for applying for funding and scholarships. In many cases you can even obtain the application forms directly from them. To give you an idea of some of the financial aid available for graduate studies, the list below presents a number of study programmes and financial aid packages that may allow you the option of studying abroad for a period after your degree.

The Talent Programme offers a scholarship to outstanding students either during or after their studies to study for an additional 6-24 months or to conduct research at a prestigious educational or research institution abroad (www.nuffic.nl).

The VSB Scholarship enables students who have completed their education at a Dutch hogeschool (Institute of Higher Education) or university to pursue additional studies or conduct research abroad (www.vsbfonds.nl/studiebeurzen.php).
The Leonardo da Vinci Scholarship offers internships for newly graduated students within Europe (regional-leonardo-bureaus.tue.nl). Study or research for graduates is sometimes supported by Cultural Treaties; more information can be obtained via Nuffic’s website (www.nuffic.nl/nederlandse-studenten/studiebeurs/beurzen).

The NATO Scholarship offers graduates the possibility to conduct research in one of the NATO member states (www.nato.int). Fulbright scholarships are available for aboveaverage students who wish to study or conduct research in the U.S. (www.fulbright.nl). There are various study programmes which offer the opportunity to participate in a unique graduate study in Japan. For example: The Vulcanus programme offers to technical students with a BSc diploma a 1-year study programme in Japan, consisting of a 4-month language course in the student’s home country followed by an 8-month internship at a large company (www.eu-japan.eu/global).

Besides the International Office’s extensive website (www.tudelft.nl/buitenland), you can also use the Nuffic BeursOpener application to search for information on study programmes, internships or research abroad, and the associated options for covering the costs through scholarships and financial aid. If you have definitely decided on a graduate study abroad, an interesting, exciting and surprising experience awaits you. Communication between fellow students and colleagues from other cultures can be a stumbling block.

Do you want to learn how cultures differ from one another and how to deal with the differences? Do you want to know how to work well, effectively and effi ciently with colleagues and students from other cultures?

Are you interested in how people from different cultures deal with (work) relationships and how great the influence of culture is on, for example, communication and the educational system?

During the 1-day workshop on Intercultural Communication given by the International Office of TU Delft, you will gain practical information on how we in the Netherlands see the world and how others do. Using a model, exercises and practice examples, a framework is given for dealing with cultural differences in the business and academic worlds. What you learn is universally applicable, so it doesn’t matter to what country you’re going, or whether it’s inside or outside of Europe. More information about this workshop and how to register can be found at the website www.tudelft.nl/buitenland.

…or in the Netherlands?

In the Information Centre for Study and Career you will also find folders containing brochures for various MBA and other graduate programmes, not only abroad but also in the Netherlands. You can find information about design programmes at other Dutch universities and general information that you can take with you if you are still weighing your options or wondering whether or not you want to continue towards a PhD. We gather as much as possible comparative quality surveys
and background literature on the added value of various graduate studies. Information on earning a PhD can of course be found at www.tudelft.nl.
